RRR™ with MMMM² in the MetaTrader 5 Automated Trading Championship 2010

Last night MetaQuotes finally turned on the 314 expert advisors that have been patiently waiting for the start of the MetaTrader 5 Automated Trading Championship 2010.

Ray the Random Robot™ was one of them. For this competition he will still be using his trusty Martingale Money Management Module (MMMM for short). However in this case we have also fitted him with Multiple Micro Memory Modules (also MMMM for short) to allow him to trade multiple currencies simultaneously. Ray is capable of trading all 12 currencies available in this competition, but after the briefest of tests, we've only enabled 9 of them.

As you've probably discovered by now, one of Ray's dumb tricks is to stay in the market 100% of the time if he possibly can. Consequently at midnight Moscow time Ray traded each of those 9 currency pairs as quickly as he possibly could. After that quick flurry of frantic trading, here is how things looked to him very early this morning:

A long way to go still, but at least Ray seems to be behaving himself perfectly at the moment.

Ray has made a very slow start in the MetaTrader 5 Automated Trading Championship. We're now well into day 4, and he is currently languishing down in 273rd position out of 314:

As you can see, Ray has had a spot of bother with EUR/USD, where his position size is now up to 2.4 lots. Although Ray's short position is currently in profit, unfortunately that means he should be sitting on 2.3 lots worth of accumulated losses!

Apart from the magnitude of those losses, something else untoward is going on. When Ray fires up his Martingale Money Management Module (MMMM for short) and does his sums he should always come up with an answer that is a power of 2 times his minimum order size (0.1 lots in this instance), except in very dire circumstances. Ray should be therefore be trading either 1.6 or 3.2 lots, not 2.4. Further investigation is most certainly required!

Following the first week of trading in the MetaTrader 5 Automated Trading Championship it's now the weekend, and we've had a chance to examine the logs Ray has been producing throughout all that hectic action to try and discover the reason for his unexpected position sizing on EUR/USD. It looks as though Ray has a bit of a problem spotting that he has successfully opened a new position following a requote, so he immediately opens a second identical position! Ray's code is locked down for the duration of this championship, so for the moment both we and Ray will just have to live with this little "feature" of his evidently erroneous electronic brain.

At least Ray has survived the first week without any major disasters. That strangely sized EUR/USD trade eventually banked a profit, and despite that apparently minor glitch he has now raced up the table to 95th position with a modest profit of $590.14. In addition all of his nine assorted positions currently have very manageable sizes of less than 1 lot, so things are set up very nicely for the start of Ray's second week battling it out with 313 other "robots", which are hopefully all rather more intelligent than him.

The MetaTrader 5 multi-currency clone of Ray the Random Robot™ is not performing as spectacularly as his MT4 cousins, in part because his take profit and stop-loss levels are set to 100 pips instead of 50. Nonetheless MT5 RRR™ is patiently working his way up the leaderboard, and this morning he finds himself in 71st position. Myfxbook don't yet support live updates from MetaTrader 5, so we'll keep bringing you regular screenshots like this one:

If you take a close look at that list of open trades you'll see that while Ray's MMMM thankfully hasn't generated any huge orders recently, Ray's current EUR/JPY position is an unexpected size, 0.6 in this case. It certainly looks as though that particular bug hasn't gone away of its own accord.

There's excitement at the top of the table too, where a new leader has raced ahead of all the competition. A Russian robot called bobsley is now showing a pretend profit of $52,653.29, against Ray's paltry $2,305.14.

Almost a month has now passed since the start of the MetaTrader 5 Automated Trading Championship. During that time Ray the Random Robot™ has been gradually working his way up the table, and today he has at long last climbed to the dizzy heights of 30th position:

To get onto the first page of the leaderboard, Ray would need to find another $4,077 from somewhere to add to his current profit of $5,955, which is not entirely beyond the bounds of possibility. To overtake the current leader he would need an extra $93,751, which I can confidently state will be beyond Ray's capabilities in the time available!

Perhaps now is a good time to discuss his final position in the MetaTrader 5 Automated Trading Championship 2010?

A combination of some lingering bugs which we didn't have time to squish before our code was locked down back in October, and what many would claim is the inevitable consequence of using a Martingale money management system, resulted in Ray digging himself a financial hole which he proved unable to dig himself out of before the championship finished just before Xmas.

Here's the evidence of Ray's sad (and inevitable?) decline:
