Ray the Random Robot™ Spread Bets at Smart Live

Ray our Random Robot has just started trying his hand at automated multi-currency forex trading using MetaTrader 4 in the MIG Bank FX Grand Prix 2010. Reading that first sentence again I realise I must also now apologise for having used such an unfortunate metaphor, since Ray doesn't actually have any hands. In fact his legs aren't up to much either, as you can see:

    SmallRayTheRandomRobot.jpg

Getting back to my story, at the same moment that we let Ray loose with 100,000 Unsubstantial United States Dollars in the MIG contest, we also put him in charge of the princely sum of 500 Great British Pounds in a real live spread betting account at Smart Live Markets. Ray had a few teething troubles with his first ever live account. It's not that he was overawed by his latest, and greatest, responsibility. It's just that when Smart Live Markets persuaded MetaTrader 4 to work as a financial spread betting platform it looks like they broke some of the standard MQL4 API functions that Ray relies on for calculating the margin requirements of his multiple orders. However after a touch of tweaking to his innermost workings, Ray is now firing on all cylinders again. Unfortunately he also currently losing money! Here is the outcome of his first few trades:

N.B. Please do not try this at home. Here at the Trading Gurus we are perfectly prepared to allow Ray to sacrifice £500 in the interests of science. Please note however, that an unfortunate side effect of Ray's somewhat stupid Martingale Money Management Module (MMMM for short) is that there is a significantly greater than zero probability that he will blow his entire Smart Live spread betting account in the not too distant future.

    Three cheers for Ray
Hope he wins the competition 'hands down'! and also wouldn't it be great if he could turn the £500 into £5 million or so!
Fingers crossed anyway - mine not Rays of course!
    Cheers,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Ray is very grateful for your good wishes. He sends you a kiss in return. He would like to give you a hug too, but he can't for obvious reasons!

The competitions are a lot of fun for him, but when all is said and done it's his live account that really matters of course. I fear he will blow his account long before he reaches £5m, but just at the moment he's up around 6% on the week so he's extremely pleased with himself:

Well - thank Ray for his reply - not so sure of the kiss but as he is a robot then! - I realise he must be hard at work every second of the day trying to keep ahead of the markets - sounds like he is doing a fine job in the live market. Maybe when he retires with all his £millions winnings he might be able to teach us all how to do it.

    Regards to yourself and Ray,

    Mike

    Hi Mike,

Ray thanks you once more for your continued good wishes. He is indeed still hard at work, and as luck would have it with your wind in his sails he is still managing to do a fine job!

This morning his live spread betting account at Smart Live Markets is well over 10% up on where it was yesterday morning. What's more all his six positions have now reverted back to their starting size of a mere 10 pence per pip:

Now Ray is waiting with barely bated breath to discover what this afternoon's NFP numbers have in store for him. He's dumb enough to try and hold those positions through any and all news releases. As luck would have it anticipation of the advance numbers was quite helpful for one of his other clones earlier in the week. Maybe the same will apply to the real deal?

    Hello Jim,
Thank Ray for letting me know how well he is doing - isn't that a brilliant result. Think if my now 'non existent' (you know the reason) trading account was up by 10% I would give him a kiss!!
Good luck to him this afternoon and of course to anyone else brave enough to ride the NFP - fingers crossed.
    Regards,
    Mike

    Hi Mike,

I don't know if you, or indeed anyone else for that matter, are interested in discovering more about Ray's innermost workings?

If you are, you can now download them here.

Ray the Random Robot Spread Bets Live on Myfxbook

Ray has just entered the Myfxbook October 2010 MetaTrader 4 ECN Trading Championship. That means he now also has his very own Myfxbook portfolio where you can keep track of his trading exploits in real time.

Here's how his live spread betting account at Smart Live Markets is progressing:

Ray's live account is currently up 35.44% after a week and a bit's trading. Maximum drawdown so far is 14.7%

Ray Requires Rescuing after Ben Bernanke Bursts His Bubble

Ray the Random Robot™ has had a difficult day today, getting whipsawed on both Cable and the Swissie following the Fed chairman's speech at lunchtime UK time.

If you look at the bright red equity curve in the previous post you will see that Ray has frittered away almost all his gains, and the drawdown on his live spread betting account is now up to 32%. If you then click through to Myfxbook you will be able to witness Ray's afternoon anguish in all its gory detail.

You may also notice that with a leverage of only 1:100, compared to 1:500 on his FXOpen ECN demo account, Ray was running out of margin fast late this afternoon. He was looking distinctly green around the gills at that point, so we put him out of his misery by hurriedly depositing an additional £1000.00 into his account, using one of our flexible friends.

I do hope that Ray will be able to pay back our generous loan by the time Xmas eventually comes around, otherwise we won't be able to afford to buy him a present.

As a new week dawned here at Trading Towers, Ray was dropping into deep do-do (DDDD for short) once more on his live spread betting account at Smart Live Markets. His position size on Cable was up to 3.2 £/pip, and on the Swissie it was up to 6.4 £/pip. USD/CHF had reversed on him yet again, and his free margin was down below £200. In order to alleviate Ray's concerns about a margin call (which is not a pretty thing to behold on MetaTrader 4!) we hastily took the padlock off our debit card yet again, and topped his account up with another £1000. Here's how things look at the moment:

You will note that at long last Ray's Cable position has now turned in a profit. Ray is currently doing his best to cross his little legs, and hoping that the Swissie does the right thing in the not too distant future also.
